A new band emerging from Mississippi this year is Eclectik Soul. And to catch your attention from the beginning, their eighteen track self - titled debut album is one of the most promising surprises I've heard this year. A solid level of songs, great vocals, interesting song writing and superb musicism in this successful blend of soul, jazz and funk. The album opens with The Invite, an open invitation to the colourful world of Eclectik Soul and an introduction to the band. 1-Achord sets the path for what this CD is all about, feel good vibes, in this acid - jazzy tune. As we talked about a solid level of songs, Eclectik Soul 's music also shows nice variation in tempo and aura. The uptempo tracks are often highly danceable and have quite some hit potential from time to time backed by fantastic sing - a - long choruses while downtempo tracks and instrumental intermezzo's are deeply soulful and touching. To name a favourite track here is almost impossible but I'm sure that fans around the world will surely dig tracks such as Time, Snatchin' Measures (great tempo breaks in here), Keep Going, Everythang, Music (heavenly chorus) and To Mama. In this Eclectik Soul debut I notice influences from all the best that music has brought us ... I feel snippets of old school acid - jazz sounds, vocals blending in somewhere between Nina Simone and Lauryn Hill, spacey funk from Jamiroquai and ... of course the purest of soul music. As I've mentioned earlier ... here at www.jazzandsoul.eu we get tons of new albums in every week and we try to listen to them as detached as possible. Now and than though there are albums that seem to be right from the first listening session and I've had this feeling with Eclectik Soul. Certainly an album I would buy to have in my collection and definitely a band I want to hear morefrom in the near future. Highly, highly recommended and to end here I would like to use a small chorus phrase from the Music track : 'M.U.S.I.C. ... you make me feel free', Nuff said !
